April is national garage organization month. If you have a garage, this is the ideal place to start your spring cleaning adventure. Usually the process is to empty the garage, sort, throw out, donate, and put things back. Let’s take it a step further. There are some really excellent ideas out there on the best way to utilize all this space. Despite the size of your garage, there is definitely more space than you think to take advantage of.
Before
After
The first step would be to see where you can install some attractive built-ins. These would probably be your best option. They provide a clean, finished look while keeping your items organized and quickly at your finger tips. You can also install a practical workbench for your projects.
Next, make use of all your wall space. Install racks and hooks for hanging shovels, brooms, rakes, etc. Peg boards are also helpful for this. Don’t forget about the space on the ceiling, this is another great spot. Install some suspended shelving and you can store totes up there.
Definitely focus on all the prime space your garage offers, but don’t leave out the shed. If you don’t have one, get one. Depends on the size of your yard, but you should go as big as possible. You can organize items from your house in totes, clearly marked, as well as outside equipment, such as your lawnmower, hand tools, bikes, etc. The shed just provides you the extra space to store bigger items that may make it hard for you to park your car in the garage. You could also use the shed for gardening tools and seasonal items.
Even if you have a small house, there’s always extra space to be found, you may just have to get creative. Once you are done organizing everything, you can tackle the most difficult step…. keeping it that way!
