Need More Storage?

Everyone could use more storage. Sometimes the problem is that it allows you to keep items you might not really need. Nonetheless, it’s nice to have more room to organize your things.

April is national garage organization month. If you have a garage, this is the ideal place to start your spring cleaning adventure. Usually the process is to empty the garage, sort, throw out, donate, and put things back. Let’s take it a step further. There are some really excellent ideas out there on the best way to utilize all this space. Despite the size of your garage, there is definitely more space than you think to take advantage of.

Before

 After

The first step would be to see where you can install some attractive built-ins. These would probably be your best option. They provide a clean, finished look while keeping your items organized and quickly at your finger tips. You can also install a practical workbench for your projects.

Next, make use of all your wall space.  Install racks and hooks for hanging shovels, brooms, rakes, etc. Peg boards are also helpful for this. Don’t forget about the space on the ceiling, this is another great spot. Install some suspended shelving and you can store totes up there.

Definitely focus on all the prime space your garage offers, but don’t leave out the shed. If you don’t have one, get one. Depends on the size of your yard, but you should go as big as possible. You can organize items from your house in totes, clearly marked, as well as outside equipment, such as your lawnmower, hand tools, bikes, etc. The shed just provides you the extra space to store bigger items that may make it hard for you to park your car in the garage. You could also use the shed for gardening tools and seasonal items.

Even if you have a small house, there’s always extra space to be found, you may just have to get creative. Once you are done organizing everything, you can tackle the most difficult step…. keeping it that way!

Basic Residential Steel Garage Doors

Nowadays, most homeowners seem to be interested in carriage house garage doors. This is great for a number of reasons. They come in beautiful designs and have a high return on investment, but they can be expensive. For someone looking to just update their old wood garage doors, raised panel steel doors are an excellent, affordable option.

Steel garage doors offer a low maintenance finish with a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer against rusting, corroding, and warping. Unlike wood doors, which need regular scraping and painting and only offer a one year warranty. The recommended exterior maintenance is to wash down the doors twice a year with a mild detergent and water. This helps protect against harsh environmental elements and salt from the winter snowstorms. Think of it as similar to washing your car when it gets dirty, it’s just good preventive maintenance.

There are several different designs of steel doors, such as raised panel, recessed panel, ranch panel, and flush. Figure out which model would best match the style of your house, and then choose from a variety of window options to complete the look. There is also a selection of colors to choose from. Actually, there has been a surge in popularity of steel doors with a faux wood finish. Therefore, if you really like the look of real wood, but want maintenance free, there is now a great selection of wood tone colors to choose from. However, if you can’t find a close enough color match, these doors can be painted.

Depending on whether they are insulated with polystyrene or polyurethane, steel garage doors are available in a range of R-values. This is particularly helpful when you have a living space above the garage or if you are heating a work space in your garage.

Steel garage doors are an excellent option when upgrading your older wood doors. They offer low maintenance, a variety of options, and a great return on investment, all for an affordable price.
